The Republic of Uganda will soon extend its power supply to South Sudan, according to South Sudan Minister of Energy and Dams, Dr. Dhieu Mathok Diing Wol.
Speaking to Eye Radio on the sidelines of the second annual South Sudan Oil & Power conference hosted by Africa Oil & Power in Juba last week, he noted that the importation of electricity from Uganda was one of the requirements of the East African Community (EAC).
“One of its conditions is that they [member states] must have to actually be connected electrically, and they have to establish something called the East Africa Power Pool,” said Dr. Mathok.
He added that: “If you have surplus in your country and you want to sell your electricity to East African members then you send through transmission.”
The power from Uganda will supply the towns of Nimule, Kaya and Kajo-Keji.
A Memorandum of Understanding signed was signed by the two countries in October last year, which would see Kampala extend electricity to the South Sudanese border towns and, in turn, contribute to improving power supply from the current 1 percent to 21 percent by 2020.
