French multinational integrated oil and gas company Total has unveiled plans to go greener with the company’s solarization project targeting the installation of solar panels in 5,000 service stations globally by the end of 2021.
Total’s program drives several efficiencies for the business, including reducing the company’s carbon emissions by 100,000 tons per year, and an estimated saving of $40 million per year on electricity.
“The project is fully aligned with Total’s ambition of becoming a responsible energy major and its commitment to developing solar power,” Pierre-Yves Sachet, MD and CEO of Total South Africa said in a statement.
Total Group’s subsidiary, SunPower, will provide photovoltaic panels for the project.
Total, meanwhile, unveiled its model of solar service stations at Skukuza Camp and also celebrated 60-years of partnership with SANParks in the Kruger National Park.
Total South Africa plans to fully solarize its 282 service stations by 2021.
