South Africa focused on clean energy

South Africa’s Ministry of Energy aims to expand into cleaner power generation from renewable energy.
According to Energy Minister, Jeff Radebe, the focus on renewables is part of various commitments the country has made to combat climate change.
Renewable power from independent producers currently accounts for less than 5 percent of the energy State-owned Eskom supplies to consumers, however, “the country’s expansion into cleaner power generation has already had a significant economic impact,” he said.
Radebe, meanwhile, also touched on earlier rounds of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement program, which saw relatively higher pricing in the first two bid windows.
He highlighted that, despite the higher pricing, government had no intention to renegotiate power purchase agreements with independent power producers.
Radebe stated that the refinancing of some projects would, however, be considered on a case by case basis.
