British renewable energy group Octopus Energy has partnered with Sherbro Alliance Partners to establish Sierra Leone’s first wind farm in Sherbro Island City’s Special Economic Zone. Announced at COP28, this marks Octopus Energy’s entry into African renewables.
With a 28% access to electricity rate, Sierra Leone is aiming for 85% installed renewable capacity by 2030. The wind farm will feature five wind turbines, solar panels and batteries for local clean energy generation and will supply data to be used as a model for future West African projects.
Sherbro Island City aspires to be West Africa’s inaugural smart city and could engage Octopus Energy for additional renewable initiatives. Octopus’ current green energy portfolio – totalling a combined $7.5 billion – span over 15 countries in Europe, Asia and Australia, with plans to expand.
