Independent hydrocarbon producer Perenco has launched its Batanga Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) plant in Gabon’s Ogooué-Maritime Province, representing the second phase of the $50-million major gas development project.

Inaugurated by the Transitional President of Gabon, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, the project’s second phase is poised to produce 15,000 tons of LPG, supplying the national market with approximately 35% of its national demand.

“The energy transition in Gabon stands out as a model of success, driven by the enlightened vision of the authorities and the commitment of Perenco,” stated Perenco Oil & Gas Gabon General Manager, Adrien Broche. “By developing gas resources locally, we are shaping the country’s energy future.”

Gas produced from the project during its second phase will be delivered to a 20 MW power plant in the town of Mayumba, where a high-voltage line to the city of Tchibanga will be constructed to supply the local electricity market. Meanwhile, interconnection to the country’s national network is poised to increase the plant’s capacity to 100 MW.

The project represents an overall investment of approximately $50 million by Perenco and is expected to create over 500 local jobs, while providing sustainable energy to over 80,000 households.
