Namibia has been announced as the host country of the inaugural Global African Hydrogen Summit next September. According to the Namibia Investment Promotion and Development Board, the three-day summit will bring together global leaders, government officials, industry experts, project developers, investors and technologists to drive investments into bankable hydrogen and green energy projects.
Green hydrogen is expected to play a crucial role in the global energy transition, particularly in hard-to-abate sectors like steel manufacturing and aviation.
Namibia, with its abundant solar and wind energy resources and vast, unpopulated land, is well-suited to produce low-cost green hydrogen. The country has been investing in the research and development of green hydrogen technologies, with the support of foreign partners like Germany, and is leading one of the largest hydrogen developments on the continent. Last May, Hyphen Hydrogen Energy signed a deal for the next phase of its $10-billion green hydrogen project, set to produce 125,000 tons by 2026.
Namibia’s Minister of Mines and Energy, Tom Alweendo, has emphasized Namibia’s commitment to becoming the sustainable energy capital of Africa and leveraging hydrogen development as a catalyst for economic development and job creation.
