The Kenya Electricity Generating (KenGen) company has signed a joint declaration with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to improve efficiency and security in geothermal power generation.
In collaboration with JICA, UNIDO will strengthen operation and maintenance capacity with IoT technologies for the Olkaria geothermal power station.
Signing the agreement in Japan on Friday, KenGen Managing Director and CEO, Rebecca Miano said: “We believe this joint partnership will enable Kenya to employ innovative methods to provide clean and affordable electric power for national development.”
She added that the declaration would create opportunities for the company to enhance and strengthen capacity, which will allow the company to fully exploit its geothermal resources to meet power needs.
KenGen currently produces the majority of the country’s power, with hydropower, geothermal, thermal and wind power contributing to the country’s energy mix.
