Canadian mining company Ivanhoe Mines’ Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) subsidiary, Kamoa Copper, has partnered with logistics company Lobito Atlantic International Sarl, to transport copper concentrate from the DRC-based Kamoa-Kakula mine through the Lobito Corridor.
A 1,732 km railway line stretching from Lobito in Angola to Kolwezi in the DRC will be leveraged as a cost-effective route to transport minerals from the mine.
“The Lobito Corridor is set to become a crucial trade route for copper and other critical minerals from a uniquely strategic region of Africa – metals that are so desperately needed for our planet’s energy transition,” Robert Friedland, Executive Co-Chairman of Ivanhoe Mines said.
The initial stage of the agreement will begin with a pilot project involving the transportation of 10,000 tons of copper concentrate produced from the Kamoa-Kakule mine, which will be transported via the Lobito Corridor in the fourth quarter of 2023.
