Italian-based energy major Eni and project partner Petroci have kickstarted first oil and gas production from the Baleine Field, located offshore Ivory Coast. Representing the first emissions-free Scope 1 and 2 project in Africa, the production milestone was achieved less than two years since the fields’ discovery.

Featuring a Floating Production Storage and Offloading vessel, the project’s first phase will produce up to 15,000 barrels of crude oil per day (bpd) and approximately 25 million standard cubic feet of gas per day (Mscf/d).

Phase two aims to come online by the end of 2024, and will increase production capacity to 50 bpd of oil and approximately 70 Mscf/d of gas.

Claudio Descalzi, CEO of Eni, stated that “We have achieved an industry-leading time-to-market of under two years from the declaration of commercial discovery. This outcome expresses the core principles of our strategy, encompassing Africa’s pioneering net-zero project, accelerated development, local gas supply and the promotion of a just transition.”

Energy produced from both phases of the project will be transported onshore via a pipeline to meet local and regional electricity demand.
