Following an audit conducted on 23 December 2021 by testing, inspection, and certification company, Bureau Veritas, Dakar Terminal, a subsidiary of global port operator, Bolloré Ports, and operator of the El Hadji Malick SY ro-ro terminal, has been awarded the Green Terminal certification, becoming the fifth port concession to obtain this label.
Awarded to encourage Dakar Terminal’s efforts towards environmental preservation, the audit was based on the eight pillars of Bureau Veritas’ labeling process. These pillars include, but are not limited to, work processes, infrastructural development that complies with international standards, the acquisition of environmentally friendly handling equipment, waste management, and the training of employees in best practices to environmental standards.
“Obtaining the Green Terminal label, validated by Bureau Veritas, highlights the efforts made on several levels by our team, particularly with regard to waste management, the digitalization of documents, as well as awareness-training actions among our employees and subcontractors,” stated Jérôme Beseme, Managing Director of Dakar Terminal, adding, “Our challenge for 2022 will be to further reduce our environmental footprint based on our current scoring and to reach an even higher level of performance.”
The label was granted to Dakar Terminal on the basis of its environmental performance, which includes the optimization of its handling equipment fuel consumption, which decreased by 26% since 2019, as well as the digitalization of transport documents and the transfer of imported vehicles to the dry port of Diamniadio, located 30km from Dakar.
Dakar Terminal became the fifth container terminal managed by Bolloré Ports to acquire the Green Terminal label, following the granting of the distinction to Conakry Terminal, located in Guinea-Conakry, a few days earlier.
The Green Terminal certification was launched by Bolloré Ports in June 2021, in an attempt to incentivize the reduction in carbon emissions by international ports.
