Algeria’s state-owned oil company Sonatrach has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with German oil and gas company Wintershall Dea to enhance exploration and production cooperation in Algeria.

With a term of two years starting from July 1, 2020, the MoU provides a framework for Wintershall Dea to identify and develop additional business opportunities in Algeria.

“Wintershall Dea is well established in Algeria through our participation in the Reggane Nord Project. [This year] we are evaluating a potential increase of activities in the country, and this MoU is an important step forward,” says Dawn Summers, Wintershall Dea Chief Operating Officer.

The agreement fortifies the two companies’ existing relationship. Wintershall Dea has been active in Algeria since 2002 through the Reggane Nord concession, a project that involves six gas fields spanning an area of almost 1,800Km2 in the Southwestern Sahara Desert. The concession is operated by Groupement Reggane Nord (GRN), a consortium comprised of Wintershall Dea (19.5%), Sonatrach (40%), Repsol (29.25%) and Edison (11.25%).
